Sock Yarn finished and a little saori weaving

EarthMotherDesigns_Sock_Fibre_Handspun_2-001I finished spinning the sock yarn and I’m really happy with the yarn. I put quite a lot of twist in it to aim for durable socks. Looking forward to knitting it up although a few other things have crept up the priority list, so it may have to wait a while. Saori 4 shaft loom

I’ve just started playing around with 4 shafts on the saori loom with a 200 thread black wool prewound warp with extra wool warp threads added in here and there. The weft is predominantly commercially spun wool with some sari silk ribbon and the odd bit of…other stuff. Early days. I’ve since played with more twill patterning and clasped weft but didn’t take the camera to the studio.saori 4 shaft 1 saori 4 shaft 2 I also picked up this wool/nylon sock fibre blend at Bendigo Sheep & Wool Show, I think it was dyed by Moseley Fibres. These are some of my favourite combination of colours in fibre, I’ve sold a lot myself, but saw their sock fibre blend and it was just what I felt like spinning at the time. sock fibre 1

The stretches of colours are a little longer than I would have liked so I was going to spin a gradient yarn but got bored halfway through and I think it’s now turning into a fractal spun yarn of sorts. Whatever 🙂 Just love the pretty colours!sock fibre 2

Handspun Weavings

I’ve warped up my saori loom with some handspun wool in soft overdyed blue and natural colour. The weft is soft white handspun wool. I’m so enjoying some quiet weaving in my new studio and loving my sweet saori loom 🙂

Floating Selvedges

I’m currently weaving some towels on the Leclerc colonial loom, and thought I would share a pic of the warp weights I use. Here are the floating selvedges weighted with a shower curtain ring that I can weigh down with as many washers as required to make the correct tension. Not pretty, but simple and effective.Warp thread weights, EarthMother Designs Studio

Studio Renovation

The EarthMother Designs Studio is currently undergoing renovation – fast tracked by the recent exciting (in a not-good-sense-of-the-word) discovery of a fairly large brown snake inside it which pushed the renovation and snake-proofing to the top of the priority list! Studio Renovation, EarthMother Designs StudioI’m looking forward to organising the studio into zones for art, spinning, weaving, fiber preparation, and pottery. Very cool – but lots of wall painting needed before that happens.

The transformation of this lovely space is very exciting. A huge thank you to my wonderful hubby. What a lucky EarthMother I am 🙂

Woven Landscape

A recent piece from the “Gold Trails” group exhibition I was invited to participate in at Grenfell Art Gallery:WendyHartleyWovenLandscape,Wool_SilkWoven in the saori style with homegrown wool fleece, hand-dyed & handspun wool yarn , a little silk-wool blend commercial top and some sari silk ribbon on a prewound Saori 200 thread wool warp.

So much fun to make. Just like painting with fibre 🙂
